The Newman University in the United Kingdom is welcoming applications Sanctuary Scholarship at Newman University for candidates looking for asylum in the 2021/2022 academic year.

Newman University is happy to be one of a increasing number of universities to provide a Sanctuary Scholarship award as constituent of the Helena Kennedy Foundation’s Article 26 Project, encouraging access to higher education for individuals who have fled oppression and pursued asylum in the UK.

They have awarded this scholarship award since 2014 and all their beneficiaries have been successful in finishing their degree.

Newman University grants one scholarship award each year to a candidate from a forced migrant background who cannot gain access finance from Student Finance England due to their Home Office status.

Worth of Sanctuary Scholarship at Newman University

Successful candidates will be offered:

  • A Tuition Fee Waiver: The fee waiver will not cover repeat years of study and is granted until such time as you are granted status that allows you to access statutory student aid.
  • Study and Travel Support: The Sanctuary Scholarship award at Newman University comprises a yearly bursary of £1000.00 each year to assist with study and travel costs. The bursary is not means‐tested and is disbursed in two instalments (one each semester). The bursary payment will not be granted for repeat years of study.
  • Personal Support: Support will be structured for each candidate to allow them to identify and surmount barriers to achievement on their degree program.

The University is not able to offer any financial assistance for accommodation. Candidates should only submit an application if they are able to finance these expenses themselves for the full length of their university program.

Eligibility for Sanctuary Scholarship at Newman University

Applicant must be:

  • An asylum seeker / forced immigrant or the dependant/partner of an asylum seeker / forced immigrant; OR
  • An asylum seeker/dependant/partner who has been given Discretionary Leave to Remain (DLR) or any other form of temporary status

AND

  • Possess a conditional or unconditional offer of admission for a full-time undergraduate study place at Newman University
  • Have put in for asylum in the United Kingdom prior to applying to UCAS
  • Presently attending a college, school, community or voluntary group which can offer a recommendation in support of your application
  • Not able to access statutory student aid due to your asylum or forced immigrant status, or a dependant’s standing.
  • Reside within easy shuttling distance of the University
  • Not need support funding accommodation

Please note: Spouses/civil partners are required to have been the spouse/civil partner on the date which the application for asylum was filed. Children/step-children are required to have been aged under 18 on the date on which the application for asylum was filed.

How to Apply for Sanctuary Scholarship at Newman University

  • Applications for the September 2021 Sanctuary Scholarship award are now available.
  • The application form and instructions are obtainable as attachments from their web page.
  • Before you can submit an application for the Sanctuary Scholarship award, you are required to have made an application for and obtained an offer of admission (conditional or unconditional) on a 3-year, full-time undergraduate degree program at Newman University.
  • You are required to have handed in your full application for the Sanctuary Scholarship award by midday on Wednesday 1st July to be given consideration.
  • Following preliminary evaluation, the University will get in touch with you to let you know whether or not your application will go on to the next stage of the selection procedure.
  • If your application is progressed, you will be asked to an interview to confirm the information you have submitted in your application.
  • If you are successful in being granted the Scholarship award, you will be notified within five working days of your interview.
